How to direct a horror scene

Hi horror fans. The next article analyzes a technique used in the film Firday 13th Part 2, the technique allows the director to scare the fans by using a fake suspense or a fake event.

The technique is simple. The character feels a danger close, so the suspense starts growing up until a climatic point where the spectator thinks the villain will attack, but It is a false alarm, then after a few seconds of calm and silence, without any warning, the villain attacks and surprises the public.

Alice Hardy, the last survivor of the first part is recovering in her department two months after the events. At around nine minutes with fifteen seconds Alice receives a call, Alice answers the phone but there is no one on the other side, Alice is scared and immediately decides to lock the door and check the apartment. While Alice checks the house a strong noise warns her of the danger.

The suspense starts growing, Alice along with the public are expecting something to happen.
A shot of an open window suggets that the assasin may be inside the house or is ready to enter. Alice reaches a weapon and slowly gets close to the window with music creating tension. When Alice reaches the window a cat jumps through it with a loud sound.

In this point, the fake event or fake suspense has distracted the spectator from the danger.
Alice thinks it was only a cat and without any music the calm has been restored. Alice jokes with the cat and offers the cat some milk, Alice opens the fridge and sees the decapitated head of Mrs. Voorhees, Alice screams and instantly Jason comes from behind and kills her.

The fake event has worked.
